Contacts hold the people you message: their name, phone number, email, company, tags and lists. This article shows you how to add a contact, edit one, organise contacts with tags and lists, and remove contacts. Anyone in your workspace can create and view contacts.
Open Contacts from the sidebar. From here you can search, filter, add, edit and delete contacts, and run bulk actions.
Add a new contact
Select Add New Contact, fill in the details, and save. You can add a name, phone number, email, company, an avatar image, tags, lists, and any custom fields your workspace uses. If you save without a name, the contact shows its phone number or email instead.
Phone numbers are stored in international (E.164) format. Use the Personal contact toggle while adding a contact if you want it visible only to you (see below).
Personal versus shared contacts
The Personal contact toggle controls who can see a contact. When it is on, the contact is visible only to you; when it is off, it is shared with everyone in your workspace. Contacts created by a sync are managed by the sync configuration, so this toggle is locked for them.
Edit a contact
Select a contact's row to open its edit panel. Editing auto-saves: text fields save when you click away, and toggles, lists and avatar changes save as soon as you change them. There is no Save button. If you try to leave mid-edit, emu.chat asks you to confirm before discarding unsaved changes.
Tags and lists
Tags and lists are two ways to group contacts:
- Tags are free-text labels on a contact. Start typing in the Tags field to reuse tags already in use. Each tag can be up to 50 characters.
- Lists are named groups you manage separately, so you can message or organise a set of contacts together.
Custom fields
If your workspace has custom fields, they appear under Custom Fields on the contact panel. They can be one of seven types: text, number, boolean, date, select, multi-select and currency. A workspace administrator creates and manages custom fields under Settings.
Find and organise contacts
Use the search box and Filters above the contacts table to narrow the list. A contact who has opted out is shown dimmed, with an Opted out marker.
Each contact row has an Actions menu to:
- Create conversation: start messaging the contact. See Starting a new conversation.
- Opt in / Opt out: change the contact's opt-out status. See Opt-outs and STOP keywords: staying compliant.
- Delete contact.
Bulk actions
Tick the checkboxes to select contacts (you can select every contact across all pages), then use the Actions dropdown above the table to add or remove tags or lists, or delete the selected contacts in one go.
Delete a contact
Choose Delete contact from a row's Actions menu, or Delete from the bulk Actions dropdown, then confirm. Deleting a contact cannot be undone.
Who can edit and delete contacts
Personal contacts can only be edited and deleted by the person who created them. Shared contacts can be edited and deleted by any member of the workspace, as well as by administrators across the organisation. For more on roles, see User roles and permissions.
Contact lists
Lists let you group contacts so you can message or manage them together. Open Contact Lists to see and search your lists.
- Create a list with Add New List: give it a name and an optional description.
- Edit or delete a list from its Actions menu. System lists are marked with a System badge and cannot be edited or deleted.
Importing contacts
To add many contacts at once, use the Import button on the Contacts page. See Importing contacts from a CSV.
