A virtual number is a phone number you rent monthly to send and receive messages from your workspace. Your plan includes a number of these based on your seat count, and you can add more or bring an existing number across. This article explains how many you get, what extras cost, and how to port a number you already own.

How many virtual numbers are included

Your plan includes 1 virtual number per 3 seats. The count rounds down, so the number you get included is your seat count divided by three:

  • 3 seats include 1 number.

  • 6 seats include 2 numbers.

  • 7 to 9 seats include 2 numbers (you reach 3 at 9 seats).

Your billing summary shows how many numbers your plan includes and how many you are currently using, so you can see at a glance whether you are within your allowance. To understand how seats drive this, see Managing your billing and seats.

What extra numbers cost

Each number beyond your included allowance is $12.00 per month (AUD), added to your monthly subscription. There is nothing extra to set up: when you add a number that takes you over your included count, the charge appears on your next bill.

When you choose a number in the wizard, each one shows its cost. An included number is marked Included and is covered by your plan at no extra charge. A chargeable number shows $12.00/mo and is added to your monthly subscription, so you always know before you confirm.

Add a virtual number

You add a number while setting up an inbox:

  1. Go to Settings β†’ Phone Numbers and select Purchase a Number.

  2. Follow the wizard. When you reach the number step, choose Get an emu.chat number to pick from the available pool.

  3. Confirm. Each number shows whether it is included or $12.00/mo, so you can see the cost before you finish.

The Phone Numbers page itself is read-only: it lists your numbers with their status and assigned inbox. You add numbers through the wizard above, not on that page.

Port an existing number

If you already have a phone number you want to keep, our team can port it onto emu.chat for you. Porting is handled by support, not self-serve.

  1. In the number wizard, choose Bring your own number to open the Bring Your Own Number options.

  2. Open the Port Your Number tab and select Submit a support ticket.

  3. Include your current number and carrier details. Our team will then guide you through the porting process.

If your existing number comes from HelloTeams or Microsoft Teams, use the Partner Number tab instead and select Contact support, and we will link it to your workspace.

Numbers during your free trial

On a free trial you are given a shared trial number so you can send and receive straight away, with no charge and nothing to set up. When your trial ends or you upgrade to a paid plan, the trial number is released and you choose your own number as part of getting set up. For what else the trial covers, see Your free trial.
